Sedation and pain relief

Pain Relief

If you are in pain, please tell the receptionist and we will see you on the same day as quickly as possible. There are 6 dentists and 3 hygienists in the practice, and usuallly we are able to rearrange our schedules to relieve your pain.It is important that you mention to the receptionist when you call that you are in significant pain as she may not be aware and may inadvertently book with an appointment in a few days time as we are usually fairly heavily booked.

Nitrous Oxide sedation

Please ask if you wish to have Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). Patients with hygiene appointments often find this of particular help to ease the discomfort that can be caused during scaling and cleaning without the need for local anaesthetic (i.e. injections).

Pain Control Options

Should you be having a procedure that involves pain, there are several options open to you. In extreme cases, it is possible to have your dental work done under a general anaesthetic at a special dental theatre at Randwick and administered by a qualified anaesthetist. Injection time and duration can vary. Generally speaking, for the lower teeth, your jaw will be numb for 3 to 5 hours. For upper teeth, due to different type of injection used, the anaesthetic will usually last for 1 to 2 hours. If you have a meeting or a special function later in the day and you do not wish to be numb for that occasion, discuss using a shorter acting local anaesthetic with your dentist.
